Local Search At The Servo?
Sun, 11 Nov 2007 21:38:28 by Jayson Munday

Google will once again be revolutionising the way we conduct our day to day lives.  It was announced the other day that Google has partnered with petrol bowser maker Gilbarco Veeder-Root inc. and they have planned to help thousands of lost motorists with directions through Google maps.  The petrol pumps will have an active Internet connection, and a small colour screen, which will display Google's successful map application.  After you have found your destination through the savvy pump, it will print off the directions for you, helping you get to your destination.

Gilbarco Veeder-Root inc. has stated that at the moment motorists will have to scroll through several categories such as landmarks, shopping centres, and restaurants that are selected by the petrol stations owner, but they hope for full functionality in the near future.

Google does not intend to make a profit from the pumps.  They will not be displaying ads, and have taken the view that they want Google to be available whenever and wherever someone may need them.  However the service station owners may have a chance to monetize the application through merchants who wish to place coupons onto the pumps.

The new partnership has planned for releasing 3,500 pumps to the American public, and plan to expand on that number depending on the demand.

This goes to show all business owners the power of not only Google, but the power of search also.  Being able to reach a potential customer through these types of applications will become a vital part of any marketing campaign.

Local search optimisation will be able to help thousands of Australian businesses be seen through the search engines, and really help local, region specific companies utilise the power of the search engines, and be seen by a vast number prospects.
